About Cypher vs Cipher

I got asked by a friend why I use the word “cypher” instead of the obviously correct “cipher”. Well, let me explain.

About my Usage of Word “CYPHER”

I got asked by a friend why I use the word “cypher” instead of obviously correct “cipher”.

For those who don’t know, there are two alternative spellings: “cypher” and “cipher”. The word “cypher” is more archaic and often used in British English while “cipher” is a bit more modern and the American English way of saying the word.

There are people, like with almost all this kind of thing, debating about which way is more proper.

I started learning English with British English and over the years some of my English teachers used American English instead, but I like the British way of English more.

Maybe it’s partially because I have been exposed to it since I was a child, but again, I was born in 2004 and I had my fair share of internet experience when I was a kid and almost all the videos on YouTube and people who used Internet around years 2010 were mostly American or preferred the American way of writing, yet I still used British English. So being exposed to it might not be the reason.

Anyways I will keep this short, I still prefer using British spelling instead of American spelling but this doesn’t mean I will use it exclusively, I often use them interchangeably.
